Fannett-Metal Fire and Ambulance Company, 18778 Dry Run Road West, Dry Run, Pa. Franklin County Company 12 was started in 1947. The first fire apparatus was housed at 18840 Main Street Dry Run. This building was a local garage of a founding member. The first engine, a 1931 Seagrave purchased from the Vigilant Hose Company in Shippensburg. The original building was built in 1950 and the apparatus bay was built in 1977. The First fire chief was Paul Hockenberry a local barber who was located across the street from the garage where the apparatus was being stored.
The original call center was in William Harold and Lorene Peterson’s home located at 18811 Dry Run Road South. All emergency calls came into their residence. They would answer the calls and then set the siren off to let people know where the call was located. Short blast and long blast on the siren would signify where the call was located.
In 1968 the Fannett-Metal Fire and Ambulance Company purchased a new Oldsmobile ambulance. In 1973 the fire company became incorporated, in 1987 two new twin van style ambulance were purchased. The fire company purchased many different pieces of apparatus through the years to replace older apparatus. The fire company to this day is still in the original buildings.
On January 20, 2003 the Fannett-Metal Fire and Ambulance Co. suffered the only Line of Duty Death for the company. EMT/Firefighter Keith Hess died in a collapse at a house fire in the village of Blairs Mills, Pa. Keith was also a volunteer and Lieutenant at West End Fire and Rescue in Shippensburg.
